Introduction
Danish kringle is a delicious and decadent pastry with a rich history. Originating from Denmark, this sweet treat is characterise by its flaky, buttery dough and sweet almond filling. It’s a popular choice for special occasions and holidays.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup cold milk
- 1 large egg
Filling
- 1 cup almond paste
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1/2 cup sliced almonds
- 1/4 cup turbinado sugar
Instructions
Prepare the dough
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk and egg until just combined.
Knead the dough
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Make the filling
In a medium bowl, combine the almond paste, sugar, butter, egg yolk, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.
Shape the sprinkles
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a 12×18-inch rectangle. Spread the almond filling evenly over the dough. Roll up the dough tightly, starting from the long side.
Cut and fill
Cut the roll into 12 slices. Place the slices in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan, spacing them slightly apart.
Brush with egg wash
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and milk. Brush the egg wash over the top of the kringle.
Sprinkle with almonds and sugar
Sprinkle the top of the kringle with sliced almonds and turbinado sugar.
Bake
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the kringle for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Cool and serve
Let cool completely before serving.
